Principles governing overseas work

All of TLM Ireland’s work is targeted at effecting sustainable change. Our focus is to empower individuals and communities to build their own capacities, to access resources and to deliver sustainable change. We are committed to a number of core principles across the projects we implement or sponsor.

TLM Ireland is non discriminatory. While Christian compassion motivates our work, we serve without regard to race, gender, religion or any other classification that others might use to discriminate.

We believe in cost effective solutions, delivering maximum change and effect at comparatively low cost.  TLM Ireland works in a planned and targeted manner with measurable results.  This allows us to monitor the change we effect and to be accountable for the resources we engage.

TLM Ireland aligns its work to contribute to national and international priorities. We contribute to the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals and work with others to attain local, relevant, priorities.

We respect the dignity of individuals and communities. The programmes we work with address issues identified by the communities affected. We uphold the right of individuals and communities to have a say in decisions that affect them.

TLM Ireland is holistic in its approach. Recognising the complexity of issues in the developing world, we seek to facilitate integrated solutions. Wherever, for example, we work with a community to address a health issue we will also work with those communities to address wider issues. For example, it is not enough for us simply to cure leprosy. We must also address the underlying causes of leprosy within the community: poor sanitation, inadequate health care, poverty...

We are committed to learning from our work sharing those lessons with other organisations and communities and applying the lessons learned in new situations.

TLM Ireland believes is an empowering organisation. All new programmes or projects must have entry and exit strategies to avoid dependency.

We recognise the value of partnerships. We don’t have to own a project to be involved. We are prepared to share our capacities, skills and knowledge where others need them to effect sustainable change. We recognise that much of our life changing work is enable and enhanced by the support of other agencies, institutions and individuals.
