Millennium Development Goals Report

11 / 11 / 2008

November 2008: The United Nations published its “Millennium Development Goals Report 2008” that demonstrated the many successes achieved since 2000.  The current worldwide economic crisis and global warming bodes badly for similar levels of achievement as we move toward 2015. 2015 was the target date set for the achievement of 8 goals including the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger. The likelihood that economic circumstances especially in developing countries will decline underlines the need for much greater effort to be made if any of the MDGs are to be achieved.

Leprosy eradication and poverty eradication are inextricable linked and success in one area is dependent on success in the other area. Sha Zukang United Nations Under Secretary General for economic and social affairs stated in the report “The poor are not only those with the lowest incomes but also those who are the most deprived of health, education and other aspects of human well-being”. These areas are the focal points of TLM.
