what is leprosy?

Leprosy is the oldest known communicable disease in the world. It is a disease that affects the whole person: physically mentally socially economically and spiritually. Left untreated it inflicts terrible physical disability. Fear and prejudice still surround the disease leading to stigma rejection, economic hardship and social isolation. It is neither hereditary nor flesh eating. Many think that it is a disease of the past but leprosy is still highly prevalent, affecting millions of people around the world, mainly in Asia, South America and Africa.

Every two minutes someone, somewhere, is diagnosed with leprosy.
